Welcome to Lillburn Station, home of Waiau Hereford Stud. Nestled between Fiordland National Park and Lake Hauroko, Lillburn Valley offers 2300ha of steep hills, rolling contours and river flats where we breed and finish sheep, cattle and deer.

In 1974, the late Colin King bought into the 1000ha that was owned by Ted Edmunds. Colin fell in love with the land and the cattle while he had been working for Ted. The Hereford stud was already established with English bloodlines and the cattle’s ability to cope, their quiet natures made for an easy decision to carry on with them. 4 generations later, an extra 1300ha, the Herefords and family are still going strong.

The years have seen many changes, more land purchased, diversifying through crop and arable farming, water schemes, developing paddocks, tracks, buildings, families and kids, to name a few. The heart of the operation remains the same, passion for the land and the stock. We run the same stock numbers that the farm did in the 1980’s. Our emphasis on high quality grasses that grow, stock management that is complimentary to the various stock classes and feed utilisation and care for the land remains steadfast.

When we decided to set the goal of finishing our own cattle on grass and crop within a year, we started looking at what hybrid vigour could do for us. Our commercial operation added Angus bulls. The results have been fantastic, nearly hitting our goal weights, and having good birth weights and easy calving traits.

The decision to add polled cattle was an easy one, finding ones that would compliment our exisiting herd and breed values was slightly trickier. We purchased 35 in-calf heifers from Matapouri Herefords in 2020 and then another 25 in-calf heifers in 2021. They transitioned to Southland with ease: good doing cattle, good feet, and great temperaments. As of January 2025 our polled herd has grown to 80 registered females.

Sourcing genetics for our cattle herd takes effort, traditionally North American bloodlines played a big part in our stud’s makeup during the 90’s. We have since turned a little closer, to Australia for top quality bulls. Excitingly, we had a chance to purchase a half semen interest of Mawarra Ultra Star from Devon Court Herefords. His first crop of bulls are featuring in this years bull line up, we are very excited to see what these bull can do not just for us, but for other breeders as well.

We hope you enjoy a look around the website. It is a new development for us and will no doubt see changes as we add events and information. Please feel free to send a message or find us on Facebook and Instagram.
