Commercial Cattle
Another unsung hero in our farming business is the commercial herd, which balances nicely with our sheep in pasture management and business diversity. Half the herd is selected for strong phenotype characteristics and are covered by our Hereford bulls to ensure we always have a strong female line. Recently, we have moved to using Angus bulls to produce a strong crop of hybrid vigour calves.
We finish our cattle on property with the aim that an animal should be ready to go by the time it is 24 months of age. The cross bred calves have increased carcass value through weight gains, allowing us to process them sooner and increasing yield , while also offering us the opportunity to sell as weaners if the weather hits us harder than normal.
