Stud Cattle

Possibly the most recognised part of Lillburn Station - Waiau Hereford Stud, they make up the smallest percentage of our farming practices. Established in 1954 by Ted Edmunds with cattle imported from Europe. The horned Hereford proved to be the most versatile and productive animal at the time for the wild, rough blocks. Able to thrive in all weather, producing and rearing a calf despite what the grazing conditions were like. The Herefords were able to open up the scrubby blocks with their horns as they grazed through the brush. Their quiet temperament is still a well recognised trait today.

140 registered cows allow us to produce approximately 60 bulls, with an aim of taking 25 of our top ones through to our annual bull sale, while we retain our top picks to put across our commercial herd. We are proud to offer Polled and Horned bulls at our annual sale. We scour the world for what we consider top genetics, easy calving, good growth and a sound animal. North America featured heavily in our breeding during the 90’s, we have now focused our attention on some outstanding studs in Australia to complement our herd.
